Chris Curling is a prominent and respected independent producer based in London with excellent connections throughout the business, both in America and Europe. In 1990 he founded his own company, Zephyr Films, which specialises in the financing and production of British qualifying films. Over the last five years he has acted as producer, executive producer and co-producer on twenty films with combined budgets of over $250,000,000.
Chris is currently in post-production on Gillian Armstrong’s Houdini film Death Defying Acts, which is backed by BBC Films, the UK Film Council, the FFC of Australia, Newbridge and the Bank of Ireland. Catherine Zeta Jones and Guy Pearce star.
February 2007 sees the release of Hannibal Rising, one of a trio of films that Chris produced with Dino & Martha De Laurentiis and Tarak Ben Ammar’s Quinta Communications. Written by Thomas Harris, Hannibal Rising is directed by Peter Webber and stars Gaspard Ulliel, Gong Li and Rhys Ifans. The $75million film is backed by Quinta and Ingenious and is being distributed by The Weinstein Company.
David Leland’s $25million Virgin Territory aka The Decameron, is another of these co-productions to have been recently completed. The film stars Hayden Christensen, Mischa Barton and Tim Roth and is also being distributed by The Weinstein Company.
This year will also see the release of The Last Legion, the third co-production with the Dino De Laurentiis Company and Quinta Communications to be distributed by The Weinstein Company. Directed by Doug Lefler, the $65million film stars Colin Firth, Sir Ben Kingsley and Aishwarya Rai.
Also nearing completion is Penelope, which received its gala premiere at last year’s Toronto Film Festival. Directed by Mark Palansky, Zephyr Films executive produced the film for Scott Steindorff’s Stone Village Pictures and Reese Witherspoon’s Type A Films. The film stars Christina Ricci, Reese Witherspoon, James McAvoy and Richard E. Grant.
In recent years Chris has also executive produced David Mackenzie’s Asylum for Paramount, starring Ian McKellen, Natasha Richardson and Marton Csokas. He was also a producer on Mike Binder’s film The Upside of Anger starring Kevin Costner and Joan Allen, for Media 8 and Fine Line.
In addition, Chris was a producer on Richard E. Grant’s recent directorial debut Wah-Wah, starring Gabriel Byrne, Emily Watson, Julie Walters, Miranda Richardson and Nicholas Hoult.
Chris is a member of the British and European Film Academies, the European Producer’s Club and ACE. He also serves on PACT’s film committee and BSAC’s Co-Production working group.
Projects for 2007 include Michael Hoffman's The Last Station, Janusz Kaminski's White Rose & Jonathan English's Ironclad.
