Mathilde, 16, is a beautiful and mysterious survivor of the Bosnian conflict. She is suspected of wanting to murder an Italian Colonel after the war. In the fight against those believed to be responsible for the war, the Colonel hatches a plan to use Mathilde and her brother Misho and ensure they are available when needed. The Colonel finds himself mesmerised by her magic, gradually reintroducing him to the joys of life, beauty and love. When the Colonel dies, she takes the blame to ensure her brother is safe. A journalist interrogates her, and in the process of discovering her story, he too is infected by her magic.
